Tips for planning wildflower shoots

  1. Be flexible-Wildflower blooms are somewhat unpredictable, within a two-week time frame. Have all your outfits prepared and ready. Have a couple of set dates during the week to be able to drop everything and be ready to go.

  2. Be prepared-Be prepared for crowds if the weekend is the only time you can go. Ideally, I would plan going during the weekdays to avoid the clusters people getting in your shot.

  3. Color coordinate outfits-Neutral color palettes seem to be the best bet when adding flowers to your background. Colors that do well are browns, creams, greens, denim blues, teals, deep reds. Try to stay away from super white whites, they do not edit well unless it’s a wedding dress. White whites will pick up every color around them, whether it be blue, green, magenta, and sometimes it will reflect the color of skin and look like an orange color.

  4. Find a photographer with a client closet-This can help ease the pressure of being flexible and prepared. Let’s be real-Mom is usually the one who wants the pics and she is also the last one to find an outfit for herself. By finding a photographer with a client closet, you get to enjoy the benefit of having multiple outfit choices to choose from, higher quality clothing/dresses, and eliminating the stress. Trust me, as a photographer we KNOW what will look good on you and photograph well to give the final images the right amount of emotive, fun and romantic.

  5. Get the kids excited- This is a time for you and your family to spend time together and make memories. Of course we can get the stand and smile images, but those aren’t the real you! Let your kids know that the pictures are a time to be able to play with each other and show your love for one another. In doing this, you will get the most authentic and true-to- you images that will be timeless and beautiful.

  6. Pick a photographer with a history of taking wildflower images-They will know the locations, and the ins and outs of what to expect.
